WOMAN SERIOUSLY HURT IN DROWSY-DRIVING ACCIDENT ON DAN RYAN EXPRESSWAY

Posted on June 21, 2012 in Car Accidents

A woman was seriously injured this weekend when the driver of the vehicle she was riding in fell asleep at the wheel on the Dan Ryan Expressway.  The vehicle veered across multiple lanes of traffic, winding up in front of a semi-trailer truck which then struck the vehicle, trapping both occupants inside.  There are conflicting reports as to whether the vehicle veered as a direct result of the driver falling asleep or if the woman attempted to grab the wheel from the passenger seat and inadvertently veered the vehicle too far in one direction.  Both the woman and the driver had to be cut out of the vehicle by emergency responders.

The driver of the vehicle received only minor injuries, but the woman passenger was last listed in critical condition.  No one else, including the driver of the semi-trailer was injured in the accident.

Drowsy-driving has been thrust into the public spotlight lately with increased reports of distracted driving causing numerous traffic crashes around the country.  While much focus has been placed on texting while driving, many studies have been conducted which show that drowsy-driving is just as, if not more dangerous than drunk driving.  Drowsy-driving is just one of the many different forms of distracted driving that have been blamed for the cause of many fatal auto accidents.
