New AAA Survey Reveals Alarming Statistics of Dangerous Driving Behaviors

 Posted on December 00, 0000 in Car Accidents

dangerous driving behaviors, Orland Park Personal Injury AttorneyNational statistics reveal that in 2015, more than 35,000 people were killed in traffic accidents—an increase of more than 7 percent. This is the largest year-to-year increase in 50 years.

Despite all the attempts to educate people about the importance of safe driving, a new survey reveals that too many drivers on the roads continue to engage in risky and dangerous driving behaviors that often leave to motor vehicle accidents. This was particularly true for millennial drivers—those between the ages of 19 to 24.

The survey was conducted by the American Automobile Association (AAA) and asked drivers about the behaviors they may have engaged in within the past 30 days of the survey. The dangerous behaviors included texting and driving, speeding, and running red lights.

Texting and Driving in Prior Thirty Days

When it comes to using texting while we are behind the wheel of a car, an alarming number of drivers from all age groups admitted to engaging in what is a proven dangerous driving behavior. Surprisingly, teen drivers came in at number four, with fewer teens texting and driving than their older counterparts.

  • Ages 19-24: 88.4 percent;
  • Ages 25-39: 79.2 percent;
  • Ages 40-59: 75.2 percent;
  • Ages 16-18: 69.3 percent;
  • Ages 75 plus: 69.1 percent; and
  • Ages 60-74: 67.3 percent.

Speeding

When it comes to speeding, millennials were 1.4 times more likely than other drivers to have driven at 10 mph over the speed limit while traveling on a residential street. At least 12 percent of them admitted that it was okay to drive 10 mph over the speed limit when driving in a school zone. Less than 5 percent of other drivers said it was okay.

Running a Red-Light

A red light means stop your vehicle, but not to almost half of the millennial drivers participating in the survey. Just under 50 percent admitted to driving through a light which had just turned red even when they would have been able to safely stop.

Thirty-six percent of all drivers in other age groups admitted to doing the same thing. Although the majority of drivers knew this was wrong, 14 percent of millennial drivers said it was acceptable. Approximately 6 percent of all other drivers felt that way.

Car Crash Injuries?

The answers of many drivers who participated in the survey are concerning and are a good indicator of why there are so many car accidents.
