Fatal Work Injury Statistics in Illinois

Fatal Work Injuries from 2006-2015

In Illinois, there was a total of 172 fatal work injuries in 2015. There were 164 fatal work injuries from the prior year. Across the country, there were 4,836 fatal work injuries that were documented in 2015. In 2014, there were 4,821 professional fatalities.

The state of Illinois recorded over 200 fatal work injuries in 2006 and 2010. More than 150 professional fatalities occurred in 2007, 2008, 2011, 2013, 2014, and 2015. Lastly, a little over 150 fatal work injuries occurred in 2009, and less than 150 fatal work injuries in 2012.

Statistics have not yet been shown for 2016 or 2017.

Type of Incident, Industry, and Occupations

In 2015, as much as 34 percent of fatal work injuries were accounted for in Illinois. In the same year, 19 percent of fatal work injuries were caused by slips, trips, and falls. Contact with objects and equipment accounted for 17 percent of work related deaths. Violence and other injuries by other persons or animals caused 16 percent of fatal work injuries, and 14 percent of work related deaths were caused by other injuries or conditions.

The industry with the largest number of Illinois work related fatalities in 2015 was the private construction industry. In the construction sector, the most frequent fatal event included slips, trips, and falls.

The occupations with the highest number of Illinois workplace fatalities in 2015 were construction and extraction, as well as transportation and material moving.
